We are the only Cairns reef, rainforest and river day tour. Our comfortable, air-conditioned coach departs Cairns daily at around 7.45am*. It takes you south past fields of sugar cane and the iconic Gordonvale Pyramid, tracking alongside the World Heritage listed Wooroonooran National Park with rainforest mountains, to your river cruise departure point. Climb aboard our luxurious boat Turtle Islander, which has two levels of air-conditioned comfort and shaded outdoor decks, all providing panoramic views.
It’s a 30-minute calm water cruise along the Mulgrave River, which is lined with rainforest and mangroves, before a short 6-mile open water crossing to the Frankland Islands. This archipelago is a natural haven and protected national park. It’s surrounded by pristine sandy beaches, with rock pools and healthy fringing reefs which can be snorkelled from the beach. Here you have up to 4.5 hours to relax and enjoy.
Included in your day is a guided snorkel tour, with snorkelling equipment and instruction, a tropical buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea. Optional activities include an adventure snorkel safari, Semi-submersible or Glass bottom boat tour and guided island walk. Kayaks and stand-up paddle boards as well as Sea-Doo scooters are available for hire. The tour returns to Cairns around 5.15pm.

Frankland Islands Reef Cruises are pleased to offer both Introductory (no experience necessary) and Certified Scuba Diving. You can book 1 or 2 dives, with all instruction provided on the way to the islands, allowing you to maximise your reef time when we arrive. The Frankland Islands is a great place to dive, with abundant marine life including but not limited to turtles, anemonefish, giant clams and manta rays to name just a few. Please Note: Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from diving. Please see our Diving page for more information. No refund is offered should you be unable to complete all offered dives.
Be adventurous and jump off the boat and snorkel along the Western reef, guided by our marine biologist. These small group tours will enable you to learn more about the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll see a vast array of hard and soft coral gardens, complete with giant clams, an abundance of colourful reef fish, and turtles.
The pristine Frankland Islands are a place of exceptional natural beauty. From their fringing reefs and rock pools, to their white sandy beaches, lined with pandanus and other native species, and shaded green interior. Join our marine biologist for an informative and fascinating exploration of the island.
This tour takes you from the beach, out over the amazing fringing coral reefs, where you’ll see an abundance of hard and soft corals, without getting wet. Spacious and comfortable seating provides each guest with a front row view of the Great Barrier Reef. The tour includes an informative commentary on the Great Barrier Reef and the different corals and animals that reside around the Frankland Islands. You’ll also see schools of colourful, tropical reef fish and sheer reef drop-offs.
Kayaks are available for hire during the day. If you want to put yourself in this picture, then don’t miss the chance to hire them. They have a two-person capacity and provide amazing views over the corals, fish and marine life below. 30 minutes hire time.

Sea-doo underwater scooters are easy to use and lots of fun! They power you through the water allowing you to see more of the reef with little effort. Want to camp on a pristine National Park Island? Frankland Islands Reef Cruises are the only commercial operator with a permit to visit the Frankland Islands, a part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service do permit some camping on the adjacent Russell Island. Caming permits must be obtained through them and we can provide your transfers. Minimum fees apply. Please contact our office for further information and a quotation.
Frankland Islands Reef Cruises also has a range of special equipment available for hire and use during your day tour. This includes prescription masks ($15), wetsuits ($15) and underwater cameras ($35). These can be booked and paid for, on the boat, on the day of travel.
